BEIJING — Leonel Manzano was prepared to be disappointed after finishing sixth in his heat in the first round of the 1,500 meters at the Olympics.

Only the top five finishers in the each race automatically qualified for the second round at the National Stadium, better known as the Bird’s Nest.

But a funny thing happened on the way to Sunday: Leo Manzano made it.
