BEIJING — Somehow, Alberto Salazar worked his way down to the third row, in an area supposedly off-limits, and found a seat. As the men’s 10,000 meters unfolded, he yelled encouragement and split times to his pupil.

He wasn’t sure if Galen Rupp heard him, because Salazar was sitting next to a group of Ethiopians, and they were pretty loud.
