Day 2 Team USA Quotes - evening session

Men's 100m final:

Walter Dix (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.): "It was the greatest race ever. I couldn't be more satisfied. I came out there and medaled. He broke the world record, can't say much more. I didn't start the way I wanted to, but I came on strong at the end. I've got a couple of things to work on."

Darvis Patton (Ft. Worth, Texas): I'm just happy to be in the final. I'm blessed and I'm still satisfied. I wasn't expected to make the team and I made the final.

Heptathlon

Hyleas Fountain (Dayton, Ohio): "I was so emotional. This is something I've been dreaming of my entire life.

I have never had that happen to me before (fouling her first two attempts in the long jump). I just calmed myself down and took my last jump."

Men's 100m semifinals

Tyson Gay (Lexington, Ky.): "Toward the finish line I couldn't tell if I made it to the finals or not. I looked up there and realized I didn't. It was kind of devastating. I may have needed more races, but I don't really have any excuses. I just didn't make it. My hamstring feels good, it's not bothering me. I wasn't too overwhelmed with it being the Olympics. It just was one of those things that happened. Maybe I could have used some more training or more races. I kept trying to get my rhythm through each round. I thought I had a better start than I had the first two rounds. I pretty much ran hard through the finish line. I'm pretty upset. When I get back to the Village, it's really probably going to set in. My family is here, everyone at home is supporting me, and I just feel I let them down a little bit. But at the same time, I did my best and everyone knows I did. When you race in the Olympics and the Trials, you peak your body two times. I was prepared to peak my body twice, but the injury set me back three or four weeks. It's (the hamstring) healthy, 100 percent. It's obvious that my fitness is not there. My legs were behind me a little bit (back kick), I think my mechanics weren't where I wanted them to be. I think I just ran out of time. I was getting better and feeling more comfortable each round, it just didn't come together. Definitely I'm interested in running the relay.

On coming back from the injury: "Three weeks, four weeks off because of the injury after running 9.7, 9.6 ... it was just a back and forth battle, reversing the negativity in my mind. It was very difficult. At the same time, I felt good. I was comfortable and relaxed. I felt I got a good start. I couldn't really feel anybody and I got tight a little bit because I was trying to make it to the final and I really couldn't see anybody (running in lane 9). Then I relaxed a little.

On Dix and Patton in the final: "I think they can do very well. Walter is a young guy, very fearless, and Darvis is the same way. I'm proud of both of them. They both deserve it."

Women's shot put final

Jillian Camarena (Tempe, Ariz.): "It was awesome to be here. To be here after having back surgery three months ago, I'm ecstatic. And to make the final was just awesome. I've been having a great time."

Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas): I'm happy with my performance. I feel I could have done better. This is my first Olympics. I can get stronger. I don't have a long way to go. Next year, I think I'll be able to compete for the finals.

Women's 100m quarterfinals

Torri Edwards (Irvine, Calif.): "I feel very good, better than the first round. There are a lot of girls running fast and still holding back. I had a good start. It was an easy day. I'm glad I'm in there."

Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.): "I don't think I completed my start the way my coach wanted me to. I'm really excited that I could run the Belgian girl down. I think this will be the best Games ever for the men's and women's 100."

Muna Lee (College Station, Texas): "As long as I'm in there, it doesn't matter. I had a good start and I'm happy about that. People are holding back. It's only the second round. Nobody is giving their all."

Men's 400m hurdles semifinals

Bershawn Jackson (Raleigh, N.C.): "I was pretty relaxed. Two down and one to go. We have a strong chance at an Olympic sweep."

Kerron Clement (Los Angeles, Calif.): "It felt good. I just lost focus on the last hurdle. I'm really pleased the other guys made it through. Anything can happen. I feel confident the U.S. can go 1-2-3."

Angelo Taylor (Decatur, Ga.): "We planned to come 1-2 in that race. I think we can sweep the final."

Men's long jump qualifying

Trevell Quinley (Chula Vista, Calif.): "It didn't' go well. I'm not satisfied that I just participated. I had two fouls and was way too conservative in my last jump."

Miguel Pate (St. Francisville, La.): "I'm upset. I couldn't get on the board."

Brian Johnson (Baton Rouge, La.): "it just didn't go my way. I didn't feel like I was having a hard time. I felt fresh. I just couldn't put it together."

Day 2 Team USA Quotes - morning session

Women's shot put qualifying

Jillian Camarena (Tucson, Ariz.): Practice has been going really well. Coming out today, I felt great. I would love to be on that medal stand tonight.

Michelle Carter (Austin, Texas): I'm feeling good. I started out a little nervous, but I made it. When I threw, I wasn't sure, but I made it through.

Kristin Heaston (Opelika, Ala.) I actually warmed up great, so it's a little disappointing. I hit the standard in warm-ups. I'm done competing for the year and I'm going to focus on cheering for my two teammates in the final.

Men's 3,000m steeplechase, 1st round

Anthony Famigletti (Knoxville, Tenn.): I wanted to get out there and run like I wanted to run. Going out so fast and finishing the way I did shows I can kick and finish 5th or maybe 3rd in the final.

When you run solo, the only trigger you have is your own mind. You have to be disciplined. I was looking at the Jumbotron to see where I was, but they kept showing the race walk. I had to imagine them right on me. I was really happy to finish the way I did.

Josh McAdams (Orem, Utah): The race went out a little slow and I didn't have my kick at the end. My legs just weren't there. I think I did what I should as far as mental preparation. I did the best preparation I could.

The opening ceremony was really spectacular and incredible. And walking out (into the stadium) today and seeing all the fans was just great. Traveling with Team USA and getting to meet all these athletes, the Dream Team, was spectacular.

This has been a great experience. I'm looking forward to a break. I'm starting optometry school soon, I just want to do a couple jogs. It will be tough with a baby on the way. My wife is due on October 31 and she's here in Beijing.

Billy Nelson (Longmont, Colo.): It's tough. I'm happy to be here, to have been here. I stepped on the line and saw everyone, it was great. It was the most people I've ever raced in front of.

At first, I think I just blew it, but after I sit down and think about it, I'll realize I was here. This is the prize you get for all the hard work. Four years from now is the Olympics I was shooting for. IN four years, I'll be older, stronger and tougher.

Men's 20km Race Walk, Final

Kevin Eastler (Aurora, Colo.): It was okay. It was a tough race, it's been a tough season. I had some injury issues after the Trials. I had sport hernia surgery in December and some knee injuries. I trained and raced through the best I could. This was my last race, I've been doing this a long time. Nine years in the Air Force. I couldn't have done any of this without them

Women's 100m, 1st round

Lauryn Williams (Miami, Fla.): It's nerve-racking. The key is stay relaxed. The stadium is packed at 9 a.m. and I'm really excited about fans showing up. I'm really excited about not having any pain in my body. I think it went excellent. I'm looking forward to tonight and working the kinks out and getting to the finals.

Muna Lee (College Station, Texas): It was really good. I'm just working on the beginning part of my race. I was nervous yesterday, I kind of relaxed once my coach came around. My coach just wanted me to go out and blast out of the blocks in the beginning. Its hard in the 8th lane, but I'm glad that I won. I want my body to be ready to do it (blast out of the blocks) the next time.

Torri Edwards (Irvine, Calif.): Itwas easy. I tried to go out and run as slow as I could and advance. I tried to gauge what everyone else was doing.

Men's discus qualifying

Casey Malone (Fort Collins, Colo.): "I felt like I was just starting to get into my rhythm. I knew it was gonna take lot more than 61 (meters) and I don't think it was enough."

Michael Robertson (Beebe, Ark.): "I thought my second throw was farther than it was. The last one, I pepped too much and went out of the ring. There is a potential for big reward but there's also a lot of risk. I'm in good shape. It was just trying to make it to that next level."

Ian Waltz (Chula Vista, Calif.): I just didn't throw really good at all. I've been fighting some injuries. I didn't have any rhythm. It kind of stinks, I've had a really good year. It's unfortunate it didn't work out."

Women's 400m quarterfinals

Mary Wineberg (Cincinnati, Ohio): "I felt a little sluggish. That's sometimes how you feel the first day. I want to get faster each round. I wanted to get in the top three and that's what I did. I could have pushed for first but I just wanted to get through."

Sanya Richards (Austin, Texas): "I felt very good. I came out hard and ran the first 200 well. When I came off the curve, I wanted to make sure I secured the win. I never worry about time. I was surprised to see 50 (seconds). I thought it was a 51-pace race."

Dee Dee Trotter (Knoxville, Tenn.): "I'm very pleased with my performance today. I was pleased with my time. It was faster than just about every third-place time. I have not had a race since the Olympic Trials because of my knee. It was doing OK but over the last three or four days, my knee has become a problem. I've got some swelling. It wasn't until today that it started to go down."

Women's pole vault qualifying

Jenn Stuczynski (Churchville, N.Y.): "It wasn't pretty, but the goal was to get over any way you can. It was a lighter pole than I was used to."

Erica Bartolina (Hammond, La.): "I don't think I was prepared. I went for a little much, but I guess it wasn't my day. I felt like I have more experience and I learned from it. The plan was to go 4.30, 4.40, 4.50, and 4.50 made it in. It shouldn't have been that hard to do, but it turned out that it was. I didn't really execute any of my jumps well.

I'm coming away disappointed. I wasn't prepared for all the excitement and emotion. My biggest meet before this was the U.S. Trials. I went out there and gave it my best but sometimes when you go out there and give it your best and it's just not enough."

April Steiner (Springdale, Ark.): "I struggled a little bit in the beginning. I don't know what happened. But each bar got better and better, and I got through (to the final).

You just look up and 'holy crap, it's the Olympics!' I had to smile."
