BEIJING — Tyson Gay, the defending world champion in both the 100 and 200 meters, did not advance out of the semifinals of the 100 in the Olympics on Saturday night, finishing fifth in his heat, just 0.02 seconds behind his fellow American Darvis Patton.

That cost Gay a spot in one of the most anticipated Olympic finals of all time, now set up as a showdown between the Jamaicans Usain Bolt, who is the world-record holder, and Asafa Powell.
